The only thing between me and the biggest shopping day of the year is….

Thanksgiving!

thanksgiving-cornucopia-clip-art

When I was younger, I loved the holiday of Thanksgiving. A day full of family visiting, preparations for the event that seem to take days, and anticipation growing of the festival, making it larger than any run-of-the-mill day.  I’m not saying that I dislike it now, but, like most holidays and birthdays, their importance tarnishes as the years go on (especially Birthdays!). And so it is with Thanksgiving. I dislike the Bacchanal that it has become. I dislike the dishes and I especially dislike the waste. All those leftovers! Most doomed to be glanced at in the fridge and passed over (and over) until they go the way of all unwanted things in the kitchen.

That being said, I always look forward to thanksgiving, and this year is no different. We keep the menu small; so as to be able to concentrate on each dish without being rushed and produce just enough that will minimize waste from the production.

So, in keeping with the stated philosophy, we have devised a meal that will maximize these curves and hopefully make the children happy at the same time:

Humbly submitted: Our Thanksgiving Menu, 2009:

Appetizers:

  • Cheese selection with crackers and wine(……..and beer)

Main Course:

  • Locally raised and smoked Ham
  • Butterbeans with Leek
  • Deviled Brussels Sprouts
  • Bourbon Sweet Potatoes
  • Tossed Green Salad with Castille (blue) cheese dressing
  • Cranberry Chutney
  • Sourdough Dinner rolls.

Dessert:

  • Pear tart, with possible pumpkin pie

That’s it. Since this is all conjecture at this point, I lack the visual support that goes with a posting. That will come later, perhaps Friday.

Till then, I would also like to wish all foodnuts a very happy Thanksgiving. Hope you have a great time with family and friends!

That sounds fantastic. I don’t like the waste, either, although with extended family it all gets parceled out and “taken care of” eventually.

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Ed – thanks for sharing.

  • Katy:

Thanksgiving is definitely family time. Ed, your menu sounds delicious. We’re headed up to Arrowhead in the San Bernardino Mountains to my brother-in-law’s cabin on Thursday. For Thanksgiving proper we’re having…spaghetti! But on Friday night we’ll have a traditional turkey dinner. I remember the first time we made a turkey up there and it took forever to roast because of the altitude. We ended up eating late but it was wonderful. Everything always tastes so good in the mountains. It’s like when you go camping. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

You are going to post the recipe for bourbon sweet potatoes, I hope? That sounds awesome. And how the heck do you devil leprechaun lettuce? Not that anyone other than me at the Denny house would abide brussel sprouts haha

  • Ed:

I will post these recipes, no problem, and Ill try to take some photos with them. I made both of them up years ago, and I have used them each year, or during. With the bourbon sweet potatoes, I sometimes forgo the Bourbon and use Mandarin Napoleon instead. Totally different, yet great! However, since I live in one of those crazy states with Liquor stores, I cannot get it without effort that makes it difficult. You, who live in California, however……….can!

Also, thanks for all the comments to recent posts. They are really why one would go to the effort of putting a posting together. And also……..I want to wish you all a great and happy Thanksgiving!

    Look forward to more……..
